On August 17, 2021, at 7:00 a.m., the Morris Plains Police Department responded to the intersection of Speedwell Avenue and Franklin Place for the report of a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist with an injured rider. Preliminary investigation, including witness statements, revealed that the cyclist was traveling south on the Speedwell Avenue Extension (along the Merchant Block) and rode through a red traffic signal, striking the right rear of a Jeep. The Jeep, which was traveling south Speedwell Avenue, had a green traffic signal and was making a right onto Franklin Place.

While we always remind motorists to use extra caution, especially in our populated “Downtown” area, The Morris Plains Police Department would also like to take this opportunity to remind cyclists and pedestrians that they are required to follow all traffic laws, especially at signals controlling intersections.
